Lincoln 2nd XV vs Nottingham Medics

A hard game on a scorcher of a day!

Lincoln 2nd XV 19 – 51 Notts Medics

Lincoln turned up the game with a very different squad that was chosen on the Tuesday, due to players dropping out or being injured so we turned up not knowing what was really going on. There was the return of a club legend in Col Stanley, the greatest prop the club has ever seen and also returns from Jordan Buckle, Doc Andrew Foskett and Max Olive. This was also a chance for two 3rd team players to make their mark in Paul “cuddles” Sellick and Millar McCoy.

Lincoln knew that the game was always going to be a challenge from the young and fit medical side. The game got kicked off by the boot of Dave Hill with a strong chase from Lincoln. Medics claimed the ball from the kick off and ran it back hard at Lincoln, however as the case has been all season Lincoln were solid in the tackles not giving away much ground to the Medics with big tackles from the likes of John Feeney who has come back in to fantastic form and Greg Telford. Medics kept pressing and pressing on the Lincoln defence for 10 minutes solid, after this point they were finally able to find a gap to go through for a try. The Lincoln scrum was not doing well, with fill-in prop Andrew Foskett slotting in to the front row role Lincolns entire front 5 seemed to crumble under the pressure.

Lincoln KO again once again a strong chase however Medics claimed it once again. It didn’t take as long for the young team from Nottingham to find another gap to be able get through to go in for their second try. This second try seemed to give Lincoln a bit more fire in the belly. Lincoln once again kick off with a solid chase from Spud Murphy putting pressure on their receiver who fumbled the ball for John Feeney to claim and set up some attacking phases for Lincoln. However no sooner did we get the ball did we get a penalty for Medics going off their feet. With a lovely kick in to the corner from Dave Hill it gave Lincoln a chance to try a classic Catch-Drive-Score. The ball was thrown to John Feeney at 4 in the line out, brought down and the drive started, the surprisingly strong Medics side were holding the maul really well so Jordan Buckle with the ball at the back of the line out peeled off only to be tackle a metre short of the line, the ball was picked up by Aaron Bird but once again kept out short. Lincoln slowed the ball down and set up the ruck, Medics set up their guards around the outside however left the back of the ruck open for Spud Murphy to pick up and dive over for Lincoln’s first try.

It was Medics turn to KO this time with a nice high kick being very well taken by Aaron Bird and set up the rucks nicely. Lincoln kept pressing up and pressing only to concede a silly penalty for killing the ball allowing Medics to get back in to our half. They were then able to capitalize on this by scoring another try. Lincoln hit back strongly again by producing a turn over to allow James Cowell to throw a fantastic pass out to Spud Murphy with Connor Willis-Humbles on his hip, saw the gap and placed a grubber kick threw for Connor, who outpaced his man to get there, however unfortunately as Connor reached the ball it has just passed the touch line, Medics Line out on the Medics 22. Greg Telford produced a lovely line out steal getting the ball back to James Cowell at scrum half who spun the ball out to the centre to crash in, producing quick ball for James to pass to Max Olive to dance around his opponents with fantastic foot work and superb speed for Lincolns second. Lincoln however fell asleep a bit after this score to allow Medics in once again. Half time 12-24

The second half saw several changed for Lincoln with the return of Col Stanley who made an immediate impression by destroying the opposition scrum allowing Lincoln to have clean ball. Lincoln were in trouble 5 minutes in to the second half with Tom White receiving a yellow card for picking up a medics player and simply dropping him from 5 foot up on our own 5 metre line, Lincoln however, like all season haven’t allowed ourselves to be bullied on pick and goes from rucks to allow us to steal the ball and get it back to the half way line where medics had a line out. Another line out steel from Greg Telford with the ball coming down to Gav Herrick (first touch of the game) who decides to fling the ball out to the centres to no one, forgetting we were a centre down to allow medics to go in for an uncontested try (dick of the day an easy decision).

Lincoln held strong for the next 15 minutes and scoring another try with a pick-and-go from Greg Telford drawing the flanker and scrum half in before passing to James Cowell whom went the rest of the way in a fantastic solo effort to go in for his 8th in 4 games (not including the one who scored for the opposition). It hit the 60 minute mark and Lincoln continued to make the substitutions giving Cuddles and Millar their first run outs in the 2nd XV both giving solid performances , however at this point the rest of the Lincoln team were starting to run on empty tanks and making silly errors allowing Medics to run in very soft tries.
