Matt Griffiths and Flynn Smith grabbed a brace of tries apiece as Lincoln Imps XV secured an emphatic 50-0 home victory against Kesteven.

Toby Barrett, Jack Miles, Adam Rogers, and Sam Cave, who captained the side with injured skipper John Raynor on the bench, also scored tries for the Imps.

Lincoln’s remaining points came via the boot of Miles who slotted over five conversions.

Not only was it a great result for Lincoln, but there were also positive signs for the future with three Colts - Zane Redfern, Finn Clements and Charlie Bargh - making their debuts for the second team and performing well.

Lincoln opened the scoring after just five minutes when a backs move off a lineout saw Michael Ward stopped just short of the line. Lucian Morosan then got the ball from the back of a ruck and offloaded for Smith to run through for a try. Miles added the extras.

Lincoln increased their lead after a big kick chase by Miles. The Kesteven full-back got to the ball, but Lincoln managed to turn it over before passes were exchanged between Morosan, Miles and Cave.

Cave then made a good break before offloading in the tackle for Miles to run in for a try, which he also converted.

Lincoln then lost Craig Finter to the sin bin for a team yellow, but it didn’t stop them from extending their lead just seven minutes later. Miles put a kick through and Barrett dived on the ball to score a try.

Captain Cave then ran from just outside the 22 and beat most of the Kesteven back line to score a great try under the posts, which Miles converted.

Kesteven then lost a player to the sin bin and Lincoln took advantage of having an extra man with another try late in the first half.

Cave made another good break before tipping the ball on to Josh Holiday, who set up Rogers to go over for a try.

Miles slotted over the conversion to give Lincoln a commanding 31-0 lead going in at the break.

Lincoln were shown a yellow card within two minutes of the restart after Barrett was penalised for hair pulling.

Despite being a man down, it was still the hosts who were next to score as a good backs move put Smith over for his second try of the afternoon.

Lincoln extended their lead when quick play out wide was initially fumbled, but went backwards, and Griffiths picked it up and ran through two players to score a try in the corner. Miles added the extras.

Both sides then lost a player to the sin bin - Lincoln’s Zane Redfearn for a team yellow and a Kesteven player for a deliberate knock on.

Lincoln put the icing on the cake of a great result with their eighth try of the afternoon three minutes from time.

After a Kesteven lineout, Lincoln put pressure on their defence and Griffiths picked up a loose ball before passing to Luke Brodrick. Brodrick then ran nearly all the way before offloading to John Raynor, and Griffiths then picked it up to race through for a try under the posts.

Miles successfully slotted over his fifth conversion of the afternoon to complete the scoring and a great victory for Lincoln.

POST MATCH COMMENTS

After the match, Lincoln Imps XV coach Shaun Dunn said: “After some squad rotation, Saturday saw the debut of George Briars and three senior Colts, who all stepped up and staked a claim for a shirt moving forward, creating some healthy competition for places.

“It was also good to have James Johnson back from injury

“We now have a few weeks off until the next game, which gives us time to work on a few things in training. We go again on April 11 - away to Paviors.”

Lincoln Imps XV captain John Raynor, who came off the bench to play in the second half, said: “It was a great win for the team.

“It was tough not leading the team, but the lads stepped up. Special credit to Sam for leading the team and I am proud of the effort and team work.

“I would also like to congratulate some of the Colts coming up and putting in a great performance.”

Kesteven’s 2nd XV captain Paul Bennett said: “The attrition of the season caught up with us. That’s not to take anything away from an impressive Lincoln 2s at the weekend.

“Four wins from four for Kesteven 2s this season just wasn’t to be.

“All the best to Lincoln for the remainder of the season.”
