Lincoln Imps XV produced a fantastic 13-try performance to finish the league season in style with an emphatic 81-7 win at Mellish.
Jack Dodunski, Finn Giffen, Adam Stubbs and Sam Jones grabbed a brace of tries apiece, while captain John Raynor, Luke Brodrick, George Briers, Sam Cave and Max Cartwright each scored one.
Lincoln’s remaining points came via the boot of Brodrick who successfully slotted over eight conversions as the Imps ended the season in fifth place.
Lincoln opened the scoring inside the opening two minutes of the match after a good lineout move on the 22 set up Cave to run it in for a try. Brodrick added the extras.
The visitors were soon in again as slick hands through the backs set up an unconverted try in the corner for Dodunski.
Lincoln were in confident mood and a third try soon followed after a scrum just inside the opposition half led to the ball being moved out to Giffen, who ran in for a try.
Straight from the kick-off, Raynor ran from his own half and evaded a couple of tackles before drawing in the last man. He then offloaded to Giffen who ran in for his second try of the afternoon, which Brodrick converted.
Lincoln increased their lead after a lineout in the opposition 22 set up Stubbs, who broke the line and offloaded the ball for Briers to go over for a try.
Strong running from Raynor down the line set up Lincoln’s next try. The Imps skipper was stopped just short before the ball was moved through the hands for Stubbs to scoot between the posts. Brodrick added the extras.
Lincoln were soon in again as Dodunski slipped three tackles to run in for a try in the corner.
Mellish scored their first and only try of the match after 37 minutes as Lincoln took a commanding 41-7 lead in at the break.
Lincoln moved further in front within just two minutes of the restart. Stubbs picked up the ball from a scrum before powering over for a try, which Brodrick converted.
Lincoln continued their dominant attacking display and it wasn’t long before Cave ran from his own half and powered through several tackles on his way to scoring a great try. Brodrick added the extras.
Slick handling through the team and strong running from Harry Taylor set up Lincoln’s next score as the centre set up Raynor to go over for a try, which Brodrick converted.
Another strong run by Cave from inside his own half then set up Cartwright, who ran in Lincoln’s 11th try of the match. Brodrick once again slotted over the conversion.
Scorer then turned provider as Cartwright offloaded the ball to set up Jones to run in for a try.
Jones soon scored his second try of the match as he ran between the posts for a try, which Brodrick converted to complete the scoring and a fine performance by Lincoln.
POST MATCH COMMENTS
After the match Lincoln Imps XV Coach Dave Rose-Allen said: “I am really happy with how this season has ended.
“The progress made has been encouraging and we’ve seen several new players and Colts all make debuts for the team.
“As a group we have moved forwards both on and off the pitch. I am particularly happy with our character and culture within the team.
“The lads really play for each other and are a tight group. I look forward to next season and the challenges it will bring.”
Shaun Dunn, who is also part of the Imps coaching team, added: “On what was a glorious day to watch rugby the boys all put in a shift with some warm weather and a rock hard pitch.
“The lads had some slick hands and strong running. It was good to see Harry Taylor make his second team debut and he looked like he had been with us all season.
“It was a strong, positive performance and I’m looking forward to what we can do next season.”
