Lincolnshire Lancers played with great spirit at the first ever IGR Touch Rugby Festival hosted by Leeds Hunters at West Park Rugby Club.
The event brought together 16 LGBT+ inclusive touch rugby teams from across Europe, including the Lancers, who finished 15th overall and showed heart, resilience and community spirit. Other teams taking part in the tournament included Lisbon Dark Horses, Raccoons Rugby Roma and Lowlander Stags (Amsterdam).
The Lancers began the group stages with a battling 9-3 defeat against Iceni RFC, who included a former Lancer now playing at Nationals.
The next match was even closer as the Lancers held a strong defensive line in the first half against Leeds Hunters Touch. Fatigue and low numbers in the second half saw the Lancers edged out 7-5 in a fiercely contested game.
The fast clinical Lisbon Dark Horses showed great speed and ball recycling skills, but the Lancers showed great character in a battling 7-1 defeat.
In the knockout stages the following day, the Lancers rallied brilliantly in the second half in a 9-5 defeat against Reading Renegades, before a passionate performance saw them leave everything on the pitch in a 6-2 loss against Clapham Feelers.
The Lancers were scheduled to have one final match against Nottinghamshire Hurricanes, but their opponents were unable to field a team due to injuries and personal circumstances. Two of their players - Jonty and Riley - joined the Lancers for the day and both performed well and were warmly welcomed.
Across the whole tournament, the Lancers scored some great tries, including from captain Orion Fergie, Ashley Vamplew, Joseph Haggo, Will Ryland, Tom Vanden Eede and Shaun Husband. Shaun scored multiple tries to make it a fitting, but emotional, send off at his final tournament with the Lancers.
Dan Tantum was named as the Lancers’ Player of the Weekend for his positivity, relentless chase, and excellent support play.
The festival wasn’t just about rugby - it was a celebration of inclusive sports and community spirit, starting with an opening ceremony filled with a flag ceremony, live singers, performances and entertainment.
Then on the Saturday night there was a funky shirt evening and a lively social, including live music, singers, and drag performers.
The Lancers vice captain, and team Chair, Jamie Walmsley, said: “Despite challenging match-ups and a small squad, the Lincolnshire Lancers played with heart, positivity and pride.
“The festival showcased the very best of inclusive rugby — camaraderie, resilience, and community.”
The Lancers have since submitted a bid to host the next IGR Touch Rugby Festival.
